Sources and methodology
Where the facts come from
I use primary sources first and say which source each article relies on. The main ones:
- Bulgarian Citizenship Act (Закон за българското гражданство), consolidated text published by the Ministry of Justice; also mirrored on lex.bg with the list of amendments up to State Gazette No. 55 of 2026.
- Ministry of Justice, Bulgarian citizenship directorate, and its official list of documents for applicants of Bulgarian origin, published through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad: its questions and answers, the March 2021 notice on the new procedure and the rules for certifying Bulgarian origin.
- Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, for residence permits of people of Bulgarian origin.
- EU sources: European Union: Bulgaria, Council of the EU on the Schengen area, Council of the EU on the euro in Bulgaria and Your Europe: residence rights.
- Practice notes and timelines published by BRIDGES on its Bulgarian citizenship by descent page. When I rely on BRIDGES data, I say so.
How I check and date information
- Each article shows an "Updated" date. It changes only when the facts are reviewed, not for cosmetic edits.
- Rules are quoted as they stand in the consolidated law on the date of review. Where official practice and the law differ, or where a number is uncertain, I say so instead of guessing.
- I do not publish client stories, approval rates or statistics I cannot verify.
How often the guides are updated
All articles are reviewed at least once a quarter, and immediately after any amendment to the Citizenship Act, a change of state fees or a new document list from the Ministry of Justice.
